The 650 hp monster has posted a lap time on the Nordschleife of 7 mins 29.6 seconds.
The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in an astonishing time of seven minutes and 29.6 seconds. That’s nearly four seconds faster than the Koenigsegg CCX supercar could manage with an extra 150 horsepower and several hundred pounds less weight.
The ZL1 is powered by a 6.2-litre supercharged LT4 V8 motor that summons up 650 hp and 650 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual, or brand-new 10-speed automatic gearbox, as used for the Nurburgring lap.
0-60 miles per hour takes less than four seconds. Chevrolet hasn’t divulged the top speed, but it reached 181 mph (291 km/h) on the drop into Tiergarten, with a few revs to spare at the top of tenth gear.
According to Chevrolet, the car used for the lap was completely stock apart from a rollcage, race seat, and harness. The running gear features Magnetic Ride adaptive dampers, Performance Traction Management, forged 20-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 tires, and massive Brembo brakes clamped by six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.
The big front splitter and rear wing pin the ZL1 to the road, while the gaping front intakes feed lungfuls of air to the engine. Even the “bowtie” badge outlines an air inlet.
Astonishingly, this sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 lapped the ‘Ring a whole 11.67 seconds faster than the fifth-gen car could. It’s also faster than the 997-generation Porsche 911 GT2, Turbo S, and GT3 RS, and the Pagani Zonda F.
Most importantly, though, the ZL1 is 2.59 seconds faster than its main rival, the Shelby GT350R.
But more relevant to owners is how stable the ZL1 appears to be at the limit. The man in the hot seat for the ‘Ring lap, chassis engineer Drew Cattell, said: “Many fast laps around the Nordschleife are dramatic, with lots of oversteer and steering input. Not so with the ZL1, which is extremely planted and stable, almost calm. With Magnetic Ride and great overall chassis balance, the ZL1 is all about being inch perfect at every turn and carrying a lot of speed.”
It should be a riot to hoon around on a track day, then.
