Two high-performance Audis line up for a kilometre-long drag race, and the results are incredibly close.

The Audi RS6 Avant might be the perfect all-around performance car; which we sadly note, is not available in Canada. It can swallow loads of gear and people inside while transporting them with a sure-footed all-wheel-drive system. Plus if the driver’s in a hurry, the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 pumps out a prodigious 597 horsepower with the Performance package. Auto Express decided to benchmark this incredibly potent wagon by lining it up in a standing kilometre drag race against an Audi R8 Spyder.

Upon first looking at this pair, it appears the R8 should leave the RS6 in its dust because one is a droptop supercar and the other seems ready to shuttle the kids to soccer practice. However, the R8 actually comes to this drag race as an underdog because the roadster’s 5.2-litre V10 makes 533 horsepower. It weighs less, though.

The result of these close specs is a far closer race than you might expect. In getting to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometres per hour), the RS6 Avant has a slight lead by taking 3.4 seconds, and the R8 needs 3.6 seconds. There’s a similar result in reaching 100 mph (161 km/h) because the wagon requires 7.8 seconds versus the roadster’s 8.0 seconds.

There’s still room on the runway after topping 160 km/h before these Audis finish their kilometre long race, so check out the video to see which one wins. It’s an impressive showing that the RS6 can not only hang with the R8 up to 160 km/h, especially since the wagon is around 60,000 euros (about $88,800 CAD) cheaper than the supercar.

For customers looking for an RS6 Avant that can go even more places, Audi reportedly has an Allroad version under development. Other than a higher ride height and slight styling tweaks, the tougher looking wagon would remain largely the same as the standard version. Unfortunately, rumors suggest the RS6 Avant Allroad would be exclusive to the Chinese market as a way to satiate demand there for high-performance vehicles that can handle rough terrain.
