A megawatt of power and 265-mile range let the EP9 be ultra quick and quite efficient.
China’s NextEV is finally revealing its electric hypercar – the Nio EP9. While the low-slung coupe doesn’t have a very catchy name, the colossal 1,341-horsepower output should definitely grab attention. The firm will also market its future products under the Nio brand name.
The EP9 features four electric motors and each one has its own gearbox. The result of this high-tech setup is the ability reach 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour) from a standing start in 2.7 seconds, and hit 200 km/h (124 mph) in 7.1 seconds. It tops out at 313 km/h (195 mph). The drivetrain also gives the hypercar a range of 427 km (265 miles).
The massive amount of grunt allows the electric hypercar to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7:05.12, which makes it the quickest EV ever around the famous track. That’s an impressive circuit by any measure, though. The time is quicker than the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition’s 7:14, Dodge Viper ACR’s 7:12.13, and Nissan GT-R Nismo’s 7:08.69. There has been a massive evolution in EV performance in the last few years. For example, the track-only Toyota PV E002 managed an EV record for the time of 7:22:329 in 2012.
The EP9 looks low, lean, and futuristic. The design follows the supercar pack of being equally minimalist and aggressive. The interior goes for a similar mix of appearing purposeful and cutting edge. Drivers also get a great view out the front from the broad windshield that wraps around the cabin.
NextEV isn’t yet announcing when EP9 deliveries begin or saying how much the hypercar costs. However, earlier speculation put the price at $1 million USD or more, which seems likely for a model with this level of performance.
