Along with supermodel Georgia May Jagger
Opel - a General Motors subsidiary sold in several markets around the world, but not in Canada - has tapped two “zeitgeist icons” for its 2017 calendar. And yes, Opel actually does use the phrase "zeitgeist icons."
The icons in question are the Internet’s favourite cat, Grumpy Cat, and supermodel du jour Georgia May Jagger. Famed photographer Ellen von Unwerth is behind the camera for the shoot.
The theme for the calendar is "Opel Wonderland of Dreams." It’s described as “a journey through the seasons with the most stunning Opel models of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.” Including the green Diplomat - a big, plush sedan from the 1970s - and the purple Adam, which is Opel’s current Fiat 500 rival, you see here.
In previous years an Opel calendar featuring the Adam was shot by Bryan Adams - see what they did there? - while another shot by Karl Lagerfeld featured his cat Choupette. Clearly, Opel likes the feline theme.
Grumpy Cat - whose actual name is Tardar Sauce - has 8.7 million likes on Facebook, untold millions of views on YouTube, has featured in numerous advertising campaigns, and even starred in a movie. Georgia May Jagger, meanwhile, seems to be pretty much everywhere in the fashion world right now.
Opel Marketing chief Tina Muller said: “With Georgia May Jagger and Grumpy Cat, we have two zeitgeist icons headlining our ‘Opel Wonderland of Dreams’. And then with Ellen von Unwerth, we have an extraordinary artist behind the camera who presents these models and our Opel models in a very special way. Following ‘Corsa; Karl and Choupette’, we’re now taking photography of famous cats to the next level.”
