One hypercar is purely electric and the other is a plug-in hybrid. Which makes it across the finish line first?
The Rimac Concept_One is currently a giant-killer in the hypercar ranks. Videos show the relatively unknown Croatian electric vehicle absolutely devouring famous competitors like the Ferrari LaFerrari. In a new clip, company founder continues proving what his vehicle can do by lining up at a drag strip for multiple runs against a Porsche 918 Spyder.
The Concept_One produces a total of 1,088 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque from its four electric motors. The quartet of powerplants also gives the coupe torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. Drivers can also tell the system where to put the power, including selections for track driving and drifting. An 82 kilowatt-hour battery provides the juice for so much boost. Rimac claims the hypercar can reach 100 miles per hour (62 miles per hour) in 2.6 seconds and 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.2 seconds.
In comparison, Porsche ended 918 Spyder production a few years ago, but the roadster has remained an excellent performance benchmark. Its combination of a 4.6-litre V8 and electric motors produce a total of 874 hp. While this is significantly less than the Rimac, Porsche’s official figures claim the 918 can get to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 2.8 seconds, and to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 7.7 seconds.
Simply in terms of its specifications, the Porsche shouldn’t be able to beat the Rimac on a drag strip. However, a recent video of an Acura NSX racing a Lamborghini Aventador showed that just comparing the numbers wasn’t enough to pick the winner.
After a short drive showing off the Concept_One’s impressive tech, the crew arrives at the drag strip for the big race. In the one complete run that we see entirely, the results are quite close. Highlights from some of the other runs showed that the finish wasn’t nearly as close every time, though.
