The drop-dead gorgeous sedan is getting ready to spawn a more practical body style for the first time in Panamera's life.
Four years ago at the Paris Motor Show, Porsche introduced the lovely Sport Turismo concept pictured below as a sign of things to come. It was Stuttgart’s not-so-subtle way of announcing plans for a wagon Panamera, and recently we have learned the production version will receive its much-awaited premiere in March 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show.
Seen here is a prototype of the car in question, but it’s trying to mask the changes at the back with some tape applied onto the C-pillar. In addition, it has stickers on the headlights and taillights to hide a design that will have very much in common with the regular sedan’s clusters. To get an idea of how it will look like once the come will come off, we have gathered a collection of speculative renders depicting Porsche’s more practical Panamera.
Speaking of practicality, the new body style will bring a boost in cargo capacity over the standard Panamera. The sedan can carry up to 495 litres of cargo with the rear seats in place and 1,304 litres once you fold them. Keep in mind these numbers are applicable only for the regular versions of the car, since the more frugal 4 E-Hybrid has a luggage compartment volume of only 405 litres with the seats up due to the extra electric hardware installed at the back.
The engines will likely mirror those of the sedan’s, meaning a biturbo 2.9-litre V6 with 440 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque for the 4S version. The 4S Diesel will have a biturbo 4.0-litre V8 with 422 hp and 628 lb-ft of torque, while the range-topping Sport Turismo Turbo will get a biturbo 4.0-litre V8 with 542 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. If Porsche has plans to sell the wagon in a plug-in hybrid version as well, it will use a biturbo 2.9-litre V6 and an electric motor for a combined 462 hp and 517 lb-ft of torque.
Following its launch in Europe in the second half of next year, the Sport Turismo will land in U.S. in 2018 at the earliest. It’s too early to talk about prices, but you can imagine the new body style will command a premium over the equivalent sedan priced at €113,027 (approx. $165,000 CAD) in Germany for the 4S.
