Seven mins 10 secs is very quick by any standard. Indeed, it's 11 secs quicker than the Ferrari 488 GTB.
There’s a saying in racing that if a car looks fast, it probably is fast. The Mercedes-AMG GT R looks ballistically fast and, well, it is.
German magazine Sport Auto got its hands on one, put in-house wheelman Christian Gebhardt in the hot seat, and stood back as he flung the AMG GT R around the Nurburgring Nordschleife in an extremely rapid 7 minutes 10.92 seconds.
That’s four seconds quicker than the Lexus LFA Nurburgring, nine seconds quicker than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, and a whole 11 seconds quicker than the same driver lapped a Ferrari 488 GTB only a few weeks ago.
Indeed, below hypercar level, only the Nissan GT-R Nismo is quicker than the AMG GT R, which might smart a bit at the AMG headquarters in Affalterbach.
The 0-100 kilometres per hour (0-62 miles per hour) time is pegged at 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 319 km/h (198 mph).
Still, whichever way you slice it, the AMG GT R is hugely fast car, honed and toned to within an inch of its life.
Under the hood is a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 motor shared with lesser AMG GT models, but with the wick turned up to 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, increases of 74 hp and 37 lb-ft over the AMG GT S.
Nintey kilograms (199 pounds) have been shorn from the curb weight, too, but adding power and losing mass is only part of the story.
Carbon fenders add 48 millimetres (1.8 inches) to the width and active aerodynamics, including an underfloor flap and a huge rear wing, provide extra downforce.
Then there’s the rear-wheel-steering system, which turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the fronts at low speed to aid agility, and in the same direction at high speed to give extra stability.
The 0-100 kilometres per hour (0-62 miles per hour) time is pegged at 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 319 km/h (198 mph). Dropping down through Tiergarten, it tops out at 302 km/h (188 mph) here.
Interestingly, the AMG GT R gets overtaken by an AMG GT3 during the lap, at which point we see the difference between a very fast road car, and a proper race car.
It's a big difference.
