The numbers are in...

When the first week of January rolls around every new year, we’re treated to year end sales figures for the industry. If you’re a numbers fiend like me, this is Christmas morning. So let’s get to tearing open some wrapping paper, shall we?

There wasn’t much of a surprise in 2016 as to who dominated the top of the lists. Ford F-Series pickup trucks took the crown as not only the best-selling pickup, but also the best selling vehicle in Canada. Having moved 145,409 trucks, Ford saw a sales increase of 22.4 percent over the 118,837 trucks it sold in 2015. This marks 51 years for Ford with Canada's best-selling truck. Ram pickups came in a distant second with 89,048 units sold in 2016. A number impressive enough, however, to make it Canada's second best-selling vehicle last year.

2016 Ford F-150
2017 Honda Civic Hatchback LX

Canada’s best-selling car, for the 19th consecutive year, was the Honda Civic. The company sold 64,552 cars in 2016, just 398 shy of what they sold in 2015. Having introduced an all new generation for last year replete with sedan, coupe, and hatchback body styles, the company held onto its number one position with relative ease. The Hyundai Elantra sat in second position with 48,875 cars sold, which once again puts it ahead of the Toyota Corolla for the second consecutive year.

On the SUV front, the Toyota RAV4 took the number one slot with a sales increase of 16.2 percent from 2015 to 49,103 units in 2016. Not far behind, however, were the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V with sales of 46,661 and 44,789 respectively.

Canadians bought a great many Dodge Grand Caravans in 2016 - 51,349 to be exact. Yes, that’s more than the best-selling SUV noted above. That’s also more minivans than the rest of the minivan market put together.
