Except for the Skyactive-D badge on the rear hatch, the diesel CX-5 looks exactly like the gasoline one.
Toronto, ON – Last year, the word "diesel" dominated the auto industry news cycle. Volkswagen's dieselgate scandal rocked the industry to a point that the word diesel was considered sacrilege. That negative news has continued in 2017 with U.S. government accusations towards Fiat Chrysler.
One of those vehicles on display at the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) in Toronto is the all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5. It will use the Skyactiv-D 2.2-litre diesel that's expected to provide what Mazda says is a "torque-rich driving experience" to an already forward-looking and more rugged new Kodo design language.
Now, we know the CX-5 is nothing new to the auto show scene with its unveil at the most recent Los Angeles Auto Show and its appearances in Detroit, Montreal, and Chicago, but the enjoyment in seeing the Mazda CX-5 in its new Soul Red Crystal paint scheme in Toronto was the lifting of its hood for a look at the optional diesel powertrain.
Granted, this will not be the exact diesel engine coming to North America. On hand in Toronto is a Japanese-spec version, but we've been told by Mazda Canada that it's very similar to the one to be used here, outside of a few minor visual differences.
The Skyactiv-D is nothing new to the global market, but this will be a first for Mazda in North America. It's a plan that has been in the works for some time, only to be stymied at first by stringent North American regulations, and then by the onset of dieselgate at around the time the Japanese brand was ready to release it.
Fuel economy numbers have not been released as of yet, but a big reason to why the diesel is being introduced is the ideal combination of performance and fuel economy.
The all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5 is close to its official sale date, as sales in Japan have already begun. Gasoline powered models go on sale in March starting at $24,900 and topping out at $34,700. Diesel models go on sale in the fall, with pricing to be announced closer to that time.
