It hits German streets in June, but we’ll have to wait until next year for a dance.
We’ve been pretty enamored with the Volkswagen Arteon since its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show last week. Smooth lines with a very prominent, unique grille help VW’s new flagship stand out in an extremely competitive segment, and now that the first video promo video is upon us, we’re still struggling to find anything bad to say about it. That is, other than being forced to wait until perhaps 2018 for a Canadian version – pre-orders are already happening in Germany, with deliveries expected later this year.
In case you missed our Arteon coverage at Geneva, the base model will offer plenty of luxury and comfort with six-way adjustable seats, stainless door kick plates, expected amenities like cruise control, and VW’s Composition Media infotainment system. Shoppers for higher-end models can expect such niceties as two-tone leather with massaging seats, a massive panoramic roof, heated everything, and enough on-board technology to communicate with all the rovers currently on Mars. Under the hood will be six engine options, though only two will be available for the German launch – a 280-horsepower 2.0 TSI four-cylinder, or a 240-horsepower 2.0 TDI diesel with 369 pound-feet of torque.
The Arteon will also be a hatchback, something not often well-received in North America outside the realm of inexpensive subcompacts. Its sloping roof certainly lends well to the format, and with 1,557 litres of available cargo space once the rear seats are folded, the Arteon should be as practical to use as it is beautiful to behold. The big question that’s surely kicking around the offices in Wolfsburg is whether or not North Americans will pay upwards of $50,000 for a Volkswagen hatchback.
Granted, that’s a grossly simplified description of a very impressive, attractive, and seemingly capable vehicle. Also, that figure is based on European pricing for high-end models – no information has been released on Canadian-bound versions but less-expensive variants are pretty much a given. In the end, we’ll just have to eagerly await details and be patient for our turn behind the wheel. We suspect it will be worth the wait.
