Chevrolet’s engineers are using Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for fine-tuning the upcoming Corvette ZR1, and a new video shows off the development at the famous track. The clip reveals that the hardcore coupe sounds every bit as mean as it looks.
The video offers further evidence that Chevy is creating two wings for the ZR1. One of them is a huge, fixed unit that looks practically as tall as the roof. The smaller example is still fairly aggressive but not nearly as big. The simultaneous development suggests the ZR1 might be available with an optional, high-downforce body kit for even sharper performance.
There’s no doubt after listening to this video that there’s a muscle-bound V8 under the ZR1’s bulging hood. Internal documents indicate that there’s a new engine powering this beast. Carrying the internal designation LT5, the mill is an aluminum 6.2-litre unit with variable valve timing, and it forgoes the ‘Vette powerplant’s usual pushrods for a dual-overhead cam layout. The speculation suggests that the engine could produce in excess of 650 horsepower so that the company could slot the model above the existing Z06, which makes 650 hp from the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 that has the designation LT4.
The latest reports suggest the ZR1 might premiere at the 2017 Continental Tire Road Race Showcase, and it could be on sale before of the end of the year.
The ZR1 could be the last front-engine variant of the Corvette for the foreseeable future. The next-generation ‘Vette will arrive around 2019 and will make the revolutionary switch of moving the engine behind the driver. Chevy’s product plan will reportedly let both models be available from dealers for a few years, which will help ease the transition by offering an alternative for buyers who will want to avoid the big change.
