Everything looks better in slow motion, especially a race car tackling a difficult circuit.

The idea of a mid-engine Porsche 911 is not entirely new taking into account there was a 911 GT1 back in the 1990's and it served as a foundation for a super rare road-legal 911 GT1 Straßenversion. Porsche is doing it once again with the new RSR version, but for the moment this is only a race car. It takes part in the LM-GTE category and here we can see it while being pushed hard at the demanding Sebring circuit occupying a section of an active airport in Florida.

Seeing the 911 RSR with its extremely wide tires and massive rear diffuser taking so much abuse while wrestling the track’s corners is mesmerizing and the way the carbon fibre bodywork shakes while the car goes over bumps is almost hypnotizing.

Positioned ahead of the rear axle, the naturally aspirated flat-six 4.0-litre engine delivers about 510 horsepower to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission. The 2017-spec 911 RSR weighs only 2,740 pounds (1,243 kilograms) thanks partially to the lightweight body panels, which have quick-release fasteners to remove them right away whenever the car needs servicing.

In the 65th edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring, Frenchman Patrick Pilet featured in this video and his teammates Dirk Werner (Germany) and Frédéric Makowiecki (France) had to settle for seventh place following a tire defect and a drive-through penalty. As for the other 911 RSR, the car fielded by Porsche GT Team and driven by Kévin Estre (France), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) and Richard Lietz (Austria) crossed the finish line in eighth place.

While the 911 RSR is restricted to the track for now, Porsche had admitted it’s toying around with the idea of doing a mid-engine Nine Eleven for public roads as a result of strong customer interest. Bear in mind that even if approved for production, the car won’t come out in the foreseeable future.
