Small cars, big attitudes; Canada's cheapest factory race series is back for 2017.

If you haven’t yet heard of the Nissan Micra Cup, we can only assume you’ve been out of the country for the past two years – or under a rock. Since Nissan launched its sub-compact Micra in 2015, it's been sponsoring the eponymous Nissan Micra Cup, which is a spec race series that runs factory Micras with mild handling and safety upgrades.

Returning for its third year in 2017, the series kicks off at the Victoria Day SpeedFest weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport) on May 19th. From there the series heads to Circuit Mont-Tremblant for the Spring and Summer Classic race weekends in May and July. In August the series makes its way to the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (better known as GP3R), before returning to CTMP and wrapping up the year at the Fall Classic in beautiful Mont-Tremblant.

Each race weekend will see the wee Micras take on two races, for a grand total of 12 races this season. Organizers say that we’re going to see a full grid, with about 30 running each race. For those of you following the series, some of last season’s top drivers will be returning and so will many of the teams.

While in 2015 we saw race teams running brand new Micra Cup cars and returning with the same cars for 2016, it’s likely we’ll now see some new entrants opting to pick up a used car with which to enter the series at discount. Not that entering the series was all that expensive to begin with, seeing as the cost of a new race-ready Micra Cup car is under $23,000.

Modifications to the stock $9,988 Micra to make it ready for racing include: NISMO S-Tune suspension kit, FIA-approved racing seat, five-point harness, fire extinguisher, modified exhaust, racing front brake pads, safety cage, driver protection net, front and rear towing hooks, and stylized Fastwheels with Pirelli low profile high performance tires. All the modifications are done by tuning shop Motorsports in Action based out of St-Eustache, Quebec.
