This is a slightly different example of a hot rod.
Street racing is dangerous, but that's generally because of the potential harm to human lives, not because the machines are in peril. However, a BMW M5 suffered the brunt of the damage in this fiery video of a street race in Russia.
The clip comes from the shoulder-mounted camera of a motorcyclist in Russia. He and a female rider get onto a major thoroughfare and then takeoff from an intersection. At the next stoplight, a BMW M5 wants to race. The bikers, particularly the woman, leave the sport sedan in their dust. As soon as the street racers come to a stop again, there’s a flash of flame underneath the BMW, and the fire spreads quickly.
The M5 driver makes the odd decision to speed away in his flaming sedan rather than getting out of the car. The fire grows, and the driver eventually stops by the side of the road. Folks eventually arrive to help put out the fire.
The people in this clip are surprisingly unimpressed with the flaming car once the fire is out under the hood. The cameraman’s view still shows licks of fire coming from underneath the vehicle, though. By not extinguishing these flames entirely, the conflagration eventually restarts.
This M5 will definitely need some repairs after the fire damage. Even if the mechanical components are somehow unharmed, the flames aren’t good for the BMW’s copious electronics.
If it’s any consolation to the M5 driver, a new generation of BMW’s high-performance mid-size sedan is on the way soon. The F90 M5 (prototype above) will use a 4.4-litre biturbo V8 with 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and the mill will route through an eight-speed automatic. A high-tech version of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system will allow drivers to put it into a fully rear-wheel-drive mode. The vehicle will feature a carbon-fibre roof and adaptive LED headlights. Aggressive trim additions will include a black kidney grille and side gills. The rear will feature a diffuser with a pair of exhaust outlets on each side.
