The biggest news is without a doubt the impressive weight loss of 317.5 kilograms (700 pounds) achieved by using more high-strength, press-hardened steels. It’s also lighter due to the reduced footprint as the new Acadia is actually 18.2 centimetres (7.2 inches) shorter and comes with a 16.2 centimetre (6.4-inch) smaller wheelbase. In addition, it is 8.9 cm (3.5 inches) narrower and sits 9.9 cm (3.9 inches) lower than the model it replaces. All these changes have allowed the base model to tip the scales at 1,794 kg (3,956 lbs).
As a result of the decreased size, you can no longer get the eight-passenger version, but the Acadia still remains a three-row crossover seating up to seven people. The good news is cargo capacity stands at a respectable 2,237 litres (79 cubic feet) if you fold down the second row.
In terms of engines, GMC will sell the 2017 Acadia with a four-cylinder 2.5-litre motor pushing out 194 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 190 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Fitted with this unit, the crossover will have an estimated fuel economy of 10.5 L/100km in the city and 7.3 L/100km on the highway.
A more powerful alternative is the 3.6-litre V6 producing 310 hp at 6,600 rpm and 271 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. This one is obviously thirstier and will return 14.6 L/100km city / 10.2 L/100km highway.
Both engines work with a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels, but an optional all-wheel drive system is going to be available.
It’s the safest Acadia ever as GMC has implemented a wide variety of systems to prevent injuries. These include Front Pedestrian Braking, Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Change Alert. It also gets a new Surround Vision camera together with front & rear parking assist, and IntelliBeam automatic headlamp high-beam control.
Another important novelty is the All Terrain model featuring an active twin clutch system and a namesake mode providing improved hill climbing capabilities. However, keep in mind the All Terrain mode can’t be had with third-row seating. This variant can be distinguished by its body-colored grille surround, bespoke wheels, black chrome trim, and some interior cabin accents specifically designed for this model.
All three versions (FWD, AWD, and All Terrain) share an electronic drive selector with Normal, Sport, and Trailer/Tow modes. The FWD version comes also with a Snow mode, whereas the AWD model benefits from 4x4 and Off Road modes.
The 2017 GMC Acadia is programmed to go on sale this spring.
