Honda’s engineers can now fully turn their attention towards getting the 2017 Civic Hatchback ready for the road after already finishing the sedan and coupe bodystyles. This new batch of spy shots shows the upcoming model testing on a curvy road in the Alps.
The 10th-generation Civic sedan has already earned major praise, including winning North American Car of the Year. Expect that success to continue with the hatchback but with the ability to carry some extra cargo in the back. The front end in these photos is practically identical to the other bodystyles, and this one has the full LED headlights, which are available on the highest trims. The biggest difference is the roof’s shape that still arches downward but less steeply than on the current four-door.
The steeply angled roof gives the Civic Hatchback a sporty look compared to the upright stance of segment stalwarts like the Volkswagen Golf. We don’t yet know whether the Honda’s aggressive look compromises headroom or cargo space versus the competitors, but it certainly looks more stylish than other vehicles in the class.
The Civic Hatchback will use with the brand’s latest engines. Examples sold in Canada and the United States will use the 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, and there will be a choice of a continuously variable transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. Europeans will also have the option of a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder or 1.6-litre turbodiesel.
Honda promises the hatchback will debut this year, and we expect to see it at the Paris Motor Show in October. Sales should begin in early 2017. This won’t be the last 10th-gen Civic variant to hit the road, though. Honda will develop a wagon at least for Europe. Performance-minded buyers will also eventually get the hotter Si and Type R versions with tunes of the company’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder.
