Even the colour appears to be very much alike
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this is just too much, and we believe Acura will have a problem with the latest example of a copycat originating from China. Meet the Diazi, a product of Jinbei which is a brand of Brilliance’s portfolio, a company which you may have heard of thanks to its joint venture in the People’s Republic with BMW.
As you can see, the SUV’s design is nothing more than a clone of the pre-facelift MDX. To make it even more obvious, the official images released by Jinbei are showing the Diazi in a burgundy hue very similar to the one offered by Acura for its midsize luxury SUV. The similarities between the two are striking, with only very few differences noticeable in the bumpers, the graphics of the lighting clusters, and the alloy wheel design.
The SUVs look very much alike on the outside, but other than that the two don’t have anything in common. According to local media, the Diazi will be offered with a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine estimated to generate 150 horsepower, while the range-topping unit will be a 1.8-litre turbo with only 10 hp more. That’s substantially less than the 290 hp generated by the 3.5-litre V6 engine in the MDX. The Chinese knockoff will be available with a six-speed manual gearbox and it is unclear at this point whether the Diazi will have an all-wheel-drive layout.
You can imagine there is a massive price gap between the two, with the Diazi set to kick off at approximately 100,000 yuan (approx. $19,800 CAD)) according to Car News China whereas the MDX begins at 739,000 yuan (approx. $147,000 CAD).
Only time will tell if Honda/Acura will decide to take legal actions against Jinbei and its poor man’s MDX. The laws in China usually protect local manufacturers in such cases, which is why many automakers have refrained from pressing charges. But with Jaguar Land Rover deciding to sue Jiangling Motor over the Landwind X7 - which is basically an Evoque clone - maybe other companies will decide to do the same.
