2017 brought a lot of change to the pickup trucks segment. Here are the ones with the best towing capacity.
In the pickup truck world, bigger is always better. In some cases, the actual data being compared has little to no relevance in the real world; if your number is higher than the number of the other guy, you win. Simple as that.
We came up with this short list of pickup trucks with the best towing capacities. Now, keep in mind, we don't necessarily mean that a truck is better for towing; its appearance on this list simply means that it can tow a heavier charge than its competitors.
In the compact pickup category, the winner is the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado and its twin brother the 2017 GMC Canyon, which can tow up to 3,943 kilograms (7,700 pounds). However, to achieve this, you need to choose the Duramax option, which swaps out the little four-cylinder for a 2.8-litre diesel engine. Thanks to its impressive 369 pound-feet of torque, this mill can tow heavy charges with ease.
If we climb up to the full-size pickup segment, the heavy hauler is once again a GM product: the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. These trucks can be fitted with the most powerful V8 in the segment -a 6.2-litre EcoTec mill- and an eight-speed transmission to tow a pretty substantial 5,670 kg (12,500 lb).
But the real bragging rights are in the HD trucks. Here, the Big Three are working hard to earn the top spot and earn the right to announce that they sell the pickup with the biggest towing capacity. This year, after a complete redesign, the winner of this arms race is the 2017 Ford F-450 Super Duty. This hulking beast uses a turbocharged 6.7-litre diesel engine to generate 440 horsepower, an Earth-shattering 925 pound-feet of torque, and tow up to 14,152 kg (31,200 lb)!
If you look at this list, one thing stands out: diesel engines can produce some pretty shocking numbers when it comes to pulling power. This is mostly due to their abundance of torque at low RPM.
And let's end today's contest with a special mention: while the 2017 Nissan Titan XD isn't technically a 1500 nor is it an HD truck, it sits somewhere between the two segments, both in terms of size and payload capacities - it can tow up to 5,602 kg (12,350 lb) when fitted with its optional Cummins engine.
